Day 3
Today was the 3rd day of the Snorri Program and the 2nd day of Icelandic language classes at the University of Iceland. To start the morning off, I went on a run with some other snorri participants. Then after two hours on Icelandic language classes, the snorri participants joined another group students for a lecture on tracking Icelandic glaciers and volcanoes given by a glaciologist. After lunch at the university cafeteria, the Snorri group met with a representative from Icelandic Roots, a volunteer organization which connects Icelandic descendents to their heritage through providing detailed genealogies. During an afternoon break, half the snorri partcipants walked around downtown Reykjavik window shopping and went by the Opera house (the black building shown in pictures below). For dinner, we were invited to the house of the Snorri committee chairman where we were offered great icelandic food and desserts! Also, at dinner I was able to finally meet my distant Icelandic cousin Kent Lárus Björnsson! He told me where our common relatives are located in Iceland and offered to give me a half day tour later this week to show me where our relatives used to live around Reykjavik. Once the group returned to the student hostel (on the edge of the university campus), myself and several others went to the pool Vesturbæjarlaug where there are geothermal swimming pools!
