Today, we had Icelandic language class where we learned a popular Icelandic song sung by the Icelandic public at their futbol (soccer) games. We learned how to sing the lyrics in order to prepare for watching the Iceland-Argentina World Cup game this Saturday in downtown Reykjavik. This is the first time that Iceland has made it into the World Cup!
After language class, we listened to an interesting history lecture on emigration from Iceland during the late 1800s and early 1900s.
This afternoon the American Snorri participants were invited to the US embassy for a discussion on the importance of the Snorri program and Iceland-US relations. Although I was able to meet the American ambassador to Iceland, I wasn't allowed to take any pictures at the embassy.
Tonight, we met up with Nordjobb and Snorri West participants. Snorri West is the reciprocal trip of our program for Icelanders to travel to North America for several weeks. Nordjobb is a Nordic exchange program that offers summer jobs for young people in Nordic countries. We gathered together to share a dinner with traditional Icelandic food such as sheep's head, hard fish, smoked lamb, cured and smoked salmon, vinatarta, liver sausage, licorice candies, fermented shark and other snacks. I tried the fermented shark and dried fisk. Besides that, I stuck to what I am used to by eating the salmon. Overall the dinner was a great opportunity to talk to young Icelanders and people from other Scandinavian countries while learning more about each country.
